I’ve been living in Italy for almost 10 years now, and I’ve travelled a LOT. One of the things I’m still struck by is the vivacity with which Italians live life. You can see it everywhere, whether it’s in the emphatic language, flamboyant fashion, passionate food or stunning landscapes. The country is dotted with examples of vibrant cities that stand out both for their bustling centres and eye-catching colours. As a color-lover myself (how could I not be, working at mywalit?!) I want to tell you about some of my favorite colorful places in Italy.
1. Burano
First up is the ultra-colorful island of Burano, near Venice. The brightly colored houses of this fishing village are said to have been painted by the fisherman to help them find their way home in foggy weather. This little gem is tucked away to the north of Venice, and is a great location for a day trip if you’re visiting the city. A simple crossbody style is the ideal accessory for a tour like this – just throw in a few essentials and off you go!
2. Cinque Terre
Next is a place that many of you will already know, either from experience or form having ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ over friends’ holiday snaps: Cinque Terre. These 5 stunning villages in the Liguria region are set along the coastline and can be visited either on foot via hiking trails, by train or with a boat tour (the best way in my opinion!). The full impact of these spectacularly colorful houses against the blue of the sea is not to be missed.
3. Procida
The island of Procida in the Bay of Naples is often overlooked for the more popular Capri nearby, but I think it’s definitely worth a visit. The pastel colored houses surround a beautiful harbour with restaurants serving the freshest seafood around. Fun fact: It was also the set for Troisi’s famous film, Il Postino! Take a relaxing stroll around this charming seaside town.
4. Sorrento
Also in the Bay of Naples is the elegant town of Sorrento. In the harbour, an array of brightly painted fishing boats is a beautiful (and romantic) sight at sunset. The main square is filled with bars and restaurants that keep it buzzing with activity long into the evening. In the streets surrounding it there are original boutiques and shops. Keep your camera hands free with a crossbody style, trust me!
5. Ostuni
Last but not least is Ostuni, also known as the White City (who says white isn’t a colour?). This stunning town of white-washed stone houses is in Puglia. The white facades reflect the sun and the stone keeps the houses cool in the long hot summers! Explore the streets and find stunning views from every angle. Surrounded by green countryside, the effect is dazzling. Make sure you stand out against the white with a pop of bold colour!
